34 Leaders from 10 countries joined together for four days and developed these “Basic Coaching Habits for anyone asked to be a “coach”. When coaching someone, we must:
#8) Always Encourage. Make sure the other person always leaves our conversation encouraged. It is my responsibility to make the time together an encouraging time.
Encouragement can be defined as: “To inspire with hope, courage or confidence; to hearten; to give support to; to foster; to stimulate; to spur on.” Aren’t those incredible words? Aren’t those words you want to hear and feel on a regular basis?
As coaches, we have a unique opportunity to “encourage” someone else. This doesn’t mean that we don’t address painful issues or walk through tough situations. It just means that one of the most important results of our time coaching, needs to be that the other person feels encouraged, or they walk away feeling hopeful.
There is so much in our world that tears people down, rips them apart and discards any value they may have. Many people have heard this their whole life, and they now believe these things are true.
We need to encourage, to affirm, to lift them up. I’ve shared this before, but I keep a green file in my desk at work. It have a happy face on the front of it, and in that file are notes of encouragement I’ve collected over the past 30 years. These are notes that breathed life into me, that reminded me of my purpose, that affirmed my gifts, that just made me feel good. Sometimes, when I’m not feeling real confident, I read a couple of these notes and remember. It just feels good.
I don’t have a file in my drawer with a sad face on it. I get rid of those negative notes as quick as possible. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t true. I need constructive criticism and I want to grow and be better, but sometimes criticism is given to simply tear you down. I’ve got enough of that going on IBM my own mind. I need more encouragement.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 reminds us ” encourage one another and build one another up.”
How are you encouraging others today? Here are some practical ideas:
* Take some time to write a personal note of encouragement to someone today
* Get someone a small gift when it’s not their birthday, just reminding them that you’re thinking of them.
* Phone a friend, without needing anything.
* Go out of your way to help someone in need.
* Point out positive qualities you see in them as we’ll as good things they are doing.
* Listen to them: their story, their experience, their passion. Show interest!
