HABIT #6: PRAYERFUL DISCERNMENT

#6)  Prayerful Discernment.  Learn to pray and ask for clarity, patience and wisdom at the same time we are listening.  Regardless of the situation, we will need God’s help to really understand and to be effective.

When you have the opportunity to coach, don’t go in with all of the answers.  As coaches, we learn from the process as well, especially if we go into the conversation asking God for help throughout the process.

Let’s look at these three things that we can ask God for:

#1)  Clarity

Have you ever tried to see something through the fog?  It’s interesting…. you know it’s there, you can almost see it, but it’s too foggy to see it clearly.  Life is sometimes like this.  In coaching, we think we know what to do, we can almost see it, yet we’re a little unsure.  We want to know for sure before making that decision.  When we pray for clarity, we’re simply asking God to make it “clear”.  Do you remember that great Johnny Nash song?  It goes like this… “I can see clearly now the rain is gone. I can see all the obstacles in my way.  Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind.  It’s gonna be a bright, bright sun shiny day.”    Clarity helps us to see.

#2)  Patience

As coaches, we’re often tempted to become counselors, working on a “fix” to a problem. Our job as coaches is to help guide through a process, to help them come to conclusions, and to walk with them through that process.  Sometimes this takes a long time.  We need patience.  Patience to walk through the process, patience for the “light to come one”, patience to listen.  You can’t rush effective coaching.  Pray for patience, you’ll need it.

#3)  Wisdom

James 1:5 says, “If you need wisdom – if you want to know what God wants you to do – ask Him, and He will gladly tell you.  He will not resent your asking.” (NLT).  We all need wisdom.  Wisdom from God helps us to know what to say, and when it say it.  Wisdom helps us to see the big picture.  Wisdom helps us to listen to what not’s being said.

Can you coach and pray at the same time?  Yes you can.  As you engage with someone you’re coaching, talk with God.  Ask for CLARITYPATIENCE and WISDOM.  He’ll give you what you need and He’ll help you be a better coach.
