On Making Good Decisions

One of the roles of every leader is to be a “Decision Maker”. Here are 8 tips for “How to make a good decision”:

#1) IDENTIFY WHAT THE ACTUAL DECISION IS

Sometimes we try to make decisions before defining what it is we’re trying to decide on.

#2) DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Get as much supporting information, details and history as possible. Don’t make a decision blindly.

#3) GET SOME HELP

Get others ideas, suggestions, opinions and help. Brainstorm alternatives to the decision. Involve others.

#4) CONSIDER THE OUTCOMES

What happens if you make the decision? Who’s affected? How will it help or hurt? Who will it help or hurt?

#5) WEIGH THE RISK

Can you put off or avoid the decision? Does it need to be made now? What action do you have to take now?

#6) GET BUY-IN

Invite others to join you in the decision. Again, get their opinion and ideas, but invite them into the decision. Broaden your base.

#7) MAKE THE DECISION

Pull the trigger, and make the decision. Don’t procrastinate or avoid it.

#8) EVALUATE THE IMPACT

Measure the impact, the outcomes and your teams response. adjust as needed.
