From “The Leadership Challenge“ by James Kouzes and Barry Posner.
After analyzing thousands of leadership experiences, identifiable behaviors that made a difference can be summarized into these Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership:
• MODEL THE WAY
To effectively “Model the Way”, you must first be clear about your own guiding principles. You must clarify values by finding your voice.
• INSPIRE A SHARED VISION
Leaders had visions and dreams of what could be. Leaders envision the future by imagining exciting and ennobling possibilities.
•CHALLENGE THE PROCESS
Challenge is the crucible for greatness. Leaders venture out: they don’t sit idly by waiting for fate to smile on them.
•ENABLE OTHERS TO ACT
Leaders foster collaboration by building trust and facilitating relationships. When you strengthen others by increasing self-determination and developing competence, they are more likely to give it their all and exceed their own expectations.
•ENCOURAGE THE HEART
As a leader, it’s part of your job to show appreciate for people’s contributions and to create a culture of celebrating the values and victories by creating a spirit of community. Leaders show appreciation for individual excellence.
