Communicating in the Present

PREPARE: for that next conversation. Get your mind free of clutter. Picture being in a room alone with that person, free from distractions, just you and them…then go do it!

PRESENCE: It’s about showing up, all of you, when you have a conversation with someone. It’s about all of you being where your mouth is. Try to become completely focused on the next conversation you have and stay there until you are finished.

PUSH: Make yourself ask questions. Make yourself listen. Make sure you understand what the other person is saying. Push yourself to hang in there and listen. Don’t start thinking of your response too soon.

PRACTICE: Especially with your wife, kids, coworkers, and those closest to you…just sit and listen. Check to see if you heard them right. Practice listening without thinking about something while they are talking.
