THE SEVEN GOALS OF SUCCESS
Leaders start with dreams. What is your dream? Why are you willing to lead? What do you want to do with your life? Who do you want to be like? What problem needs to be solved? Your dream may take may different shapes: you can say “I will be happy no matter what. Let’s just go along and see what happens.”, or move all the way to, “This is what I want to do. This is the difference I want to make!” There are three things to remember as you develop your dream.
1. Dreams come from someplace. Where did your dream come from? Is it based on pride, you want to be the biggest and best? Is it based on competition, you want to be more important than the other person? Is it based on need, someone has to do something? Or, is it based on fear, if I don’t do this what will I do? Why do you want to develop this dream?
2. Take the first step of realizing your dream. Dreams don’t work if they stay a secret. Discuss it with others. Ask if anyone else is doing this. Maybe you could join them or learn from their success and failures. Listen to their questions, think about the obstacles, refine your plans, focus your efforts, get the picture of exactly what you are going to do clearer in your mind. Figure out how to explain your dream to someone else in 60 seconds.
3. The next step in realizing your dream is to actually do one thing that will move you in the direction of your dream. Don’t be afraid of failure, it is often the best teacher. Select the thing that has to be done and do it the best you can, no matter how small or large. Do something!
Dreams are what leaders build their plans upon, and plans are what you need to succeed. Your plans will define your dream. Your dream will craft your plans. So, move carefully and purposefully. But, move with the discipline of one who knows what they need to do and has the commitment and determination to do what is necessary to get there. First steps are often the most important. Make it your goal to understand, be able to articulate, and present your dream in a way that allows others to help you in the development of that dream.
