Running on Empty

Jackson Browne wrote this great song called, “Running on Empty“.  A few lines from this song tell us:

“I don’t know where I’m running now, I’m just running on    Running on – running on empty     Running on – running blind      Running on – running into the sun     But I’m running behind”

He goes on to sing…

“I don’t know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels .  I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through.  Looking into their eyes I see them running too…”

Do you relate with these words?

The other day I was driving my truck, and the fuel light came on, you know, the one that tells you that you’re almost out of gas.  The first thing I asked myself was, “I wonder how far I can go before I run out of gas?”   I kept driving for a ways, then the idea of running out of gas brought me back to reality, and I went to a gas station to fill up.

Do you relate with these words?

Are you running on empty?  Are you trying to figure out how far you can go before you completely run out of gas?

In Wayne Cordeiro’s book, “Leading on Empty”  (Bethany House Publishers ©2009), he begins his book with a chapter entitled, “When the needle points to empty”.  He cautions us to pay attention to ourselves before we hit the wall.  In fact, he says:  “The only way to finish strong will be to first replenish your system.  If you don’t, prepare for a crash.”

Matthew 11:28 – 30 reminds us:  (The Message)  “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

How are you feeling today?  Is your “needle” pointing to empty?  Are you tired?  Worn out?  Burned out?

Are you trying to figure out how long you can keep going at this pace?

Stop.  Breath Deep.  Rest.  Refill  your tank.  Trust God.

Are you running on empty today?
